Aponogeton longiplumulosus

Aponogeton longiplumulosus is one of the most dramatic background plants available in the hobby. Native to Madagascar, it produces very long, wide leaves with margins so deeply and densely ruffled that they resemble feathers or plumes — the meaning behind its species epithet. The leaves are a rich mid-green and can reach 50–80 cm in length in a large, well-maintained aquarium, creating a truly imposing background structure.

This species requires the typical conditions for Malagasy Aponogeton: very soft, slightly acidic, warm water, a nutrient-rich substrate, and consistent moderate to high lighting. CO2 supplementation significantly benefits growth rate and leaf quality. Like other Malagasy species it undergoes a periodic dormancy, after which leaves die back and then regrow vigorously once conditions are restored.

A. longiplumulosus is best kept as a single specimen in a large aquarium of at least 200 litres, where its extraordinary foliage can take centre stage. It pairs beautifully with bold hardscape — large stones or driftwood — that provide a contrasting backdrop for its feathery leaves.

Light: Medium to high; strong light intensifies leaf ruffling and promotes the longest, most dramatic foliage. CO2: Beneficial; injection at 20–25 mg/l noticeably accelerates growth and enhances the characteristic ruffled margins. Fertilisation: Rich substrate mandatory; supplement weekly with a comprehensive liquid fertiliser and monthly iron dosing. Placement: Background centrepiece in large aquariums; allow 30 cm of open substrate on all sides. Propagation: Offset bulbs produced after flowering; harvest when firmly established and 2–3 cm in diameter.
