Aponogeton madagascariensis
Also known as: Madagascar Lace Plant, Lattice Plant
Origin: Africa
Aponogeton madagascariensis is endemic to Madagascar and is without question one of the most spectacular plants in the planted aquarium hobby. Rather than solid leaf blades, it produces translucent, lattice-like leaves where only the venation remains, creating a ghostly, filigree structure of extraordinary beauty. It is challenging to keep: it requires soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated, nutrient-poor water, cooler temperatures, and a mandatory dormancy period. However, for dedicated aquarists willing to meet its demands, it is an unforgettable centrepiece.
Light: Medium (25–45 PAR); avoid very bright light which encourages algae on the delicate lattice. CO2: Beneficial; moderate injection improves leaf structure and growth. Fertiliser: Low-dose root tab every 6 months; avoid overfeeding; low-nutrient water is critical. Planting: Plant corm shallowly in fine, low-nutrient substrate; cool water (18–22°C) is essential for long-term success. Growth: Slow; reaches 25–45 cm; requires 2–3 month cold dormancy each year; handle leaves with extreme care.
