Aponogeton pectinatus
Also known as: Comb Aponogeton, Pectinate Aponogeton
Origin: South Africa
Aponogeton pectinatus is a distinctive South African species whose leaf form departs sharply from the typical broad strap of other Aponogeton. Its leaves are long and very narrow with lateral segments arranged along a central midrib in a comb or pectinate pattern, creating a fine, feathery texture similar in appearance to some Myriophyllum or Hottonia species. This gives the plant a delicate, almost herbaceous quality that contrasts beautifully with bold-leaved neighbours.
In nature it grows in the cool, seasonal rivers of the Cape region, and in cultivation it appreciates similar cool, well-oxygenated conditions with temperatures ideally between 16 and 22 °C. It is therefore most at home in temperate aquariums, unheated outdoor tubs in mild climates, and cold-water biotope displays. It tolerates moderate hardness.
Like other South African Aponogeton it undergoes a seasonal dormancy, typically during summer heat. Keeping the aquarium cool and well-oxygenated during summer prolongs the active growing season.
Light: Medium; consistent moderate light over a 10-hour day keeps the delicate comb-like leaves well formed. CO2: Not required; low-tech, cool-water setups suit this species perfectly well. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 10 weeks; lean supplementation suits its temperate lifestyle. Placement: Background in cool-water aquariums; associate with other temperate species such as Ranunculus and Callitriche. Propagation: Offset bulbs at the corm base; harvest after dormancy and replant in a nutrient-rich, cool substrate.
