Aponogeton rigidifolius
Also known as: Stiff Aponogeton Bulb Pack, Rigid-leaf Aponogeton Bulb
Origin: Sri Lanka
Aponogeton rigidifolius is one of the most architecturally distinctive Sri Lankan species, and this bulb pack makes it accessible to aquarists who want to establish the plant from corm stage and observe its development. The stiff, dark-green, heavily crinkled leaves that characterise the mature plant emerge progressively from the bulb over several weeks, each leaf somewhat stiffer and more textured than the last as the bulb establishes its root system.
Each bulb in the pack is a dormant corm from cultivated stock. Plant halfway into a fine, nutrient-rich substrate in tropical water at 22–28 °C. The initial leaves may be narrower and less crinkled than those of a mature established plant, but the full characteristic stiffness and crinkling develop as the plant matures over the first 3–4 months.
For collectors wanting to compare Aponogeton species in terms of their developmental trajectory, A. rigidifolius is particularly interesting because its leaves change noticeably in character as the plant matures — a rewarding process to observe from bulb stage.
Light: Medium; consistent moderate light from the outset encourages steady leaf development from the dormant bulb. CO2: Not required; grows reliably without supplementation once the bulb is established. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 10 weeks; micronutrient dosing monthly helps develop the characteristic dark green colour. Placement: Plant bulbs halfway into substrate at the rear, pointing up with tip exposed. Propagation: Offsets produced slowly; divide the rhizome-like corm only on well-established, multi-year plants.
