Aponogeton sp.
Also known as: Red Aponogeton, Burgundy Aponogeton
Origin: Unknown / cultivated
Aponogeton sp. 'Red' is an undescribed species or cultivar circulating in the specialist planted tank hobby that develops striking red to deep burgundy leaf colouration under sufficiently bright, high-quality lighting. The leaves are broad and moderately undulate with a smooth surface, and the red pigmentation extends from the leaf petiole to the leaf tip, intensifying under high light and CO2 enrichment.
Its exact origin is uncertain — it may be a Malagasy species or an Asian form — but care requirements are broadly similar to tropical Aponogeton species from soft-water environments. It benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and regular micronutrient supplementation, particularly iron, which directly enhances the red pigmentation.
As a collector's item, Aponogeton sp. 'Red' works best as a solo centrepiece plant in an aquascape where the red leaves contrast with lush green carpets or pale sandy substrate. It is moderately demanding and rewards attentive husbandry with extraordinary colour.
Light: High; the red pigmentation is only fully expressed under strong, full-spectrum lighting of at least 0.5 W/litre. CO2: Recommended; CO2 injection at 20–25 mg/l enhances red colouration and accelerates growth. Fertilisation: Iron-rich fertiliser weekly; root tabs every 6–8 weeks; trace elements including manganese benefit colour development. Placement: Background centrepiece; allow 25 cm of open substrate around the bulb for full rosette expansion. Propagation: Offset bulbs at the corm base; red colour is transmitted to offspring bulbs reliably.
