About

Bacopa monnieri is one of the most widely distributed aquatic plants in the world, naturally colonising muddy banks, rice paddies, tidal flats, and slow streams across Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This cosmopolitan distribution reflects its extreme adaptability — it can survive in saline, brackish, and freshwater environments alike, at temperatures ranging from subtropical cool to tropical warm. Its small, succulent, oblong leaves are bright green and arranged in pairs on slender, branching stems. In the aquarium hobby it is used as a lightweight midground or background filler plant whose compact growth habit does not overwhelm smaller tanks. Unlike its cousin Bacopa caroliniana, B. monnieri tends to stay more delicate in appearance and tolerates cooler water, making it suitable for temperate setups. It also has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine as a cognitive herb, adding ethnobotanical interest. In aquariums it provides cover for surface-oriented fish and nano species, and its constant gentle growth makes it a great biological filter supplement in planted tanks.

Care Guide

Placement Suit to the mid or background; individual stems can also be used in the foreground of very large tanks. Plant in clusters of 4–6 stems 2 cm apart for a dense visual effect.

Lighting Tolerates a wide lighting range from low (15 PAR) to high (70+ PAR). Under low light growth slows considerably; under high light it stays compact and produces white flowers at the surface.

CO2 & Fertilisation Does not require CO2 injection. A balanced liquid fertiliser applied weekly maintains vibrant green coloration. Root tabs in nutrient-poor substrates boost growth rate noticeably.

Propagation Take stem cuttings of 5–8 cm, remove the lowest leaf pairs, and insert into substrate. Roots emerge within a week. The plant also spreads via runners in loose substrate.

Trimming Trim tops regularly to prevent the plant from reaching the water surface and growing emersed. Cutting back every 2–4 weeks encourages lateral branching for a fuller appearance. Remove any yellowing lower leaves promptly.
