Bacopa monnieri
Also known as: Moneywort, Water Hyssop, Brahmi
Origin: Pantropical / cosmopolitan
Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Moneywort or Water Hyssop, is one of the oldest and most widely cultivated aquarium plants in the hobby. Its small, bright green, succulent oval leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along upright stems, creating a neat, uniform column that suits midground and background use in planted community aquariums. It is exceptionally adaptable, tolerating an enormous range of water conditions, temperatures, and light levels, making it suitable for virtually any freshwater aquarium. Slow to moderate growth ensures it remains manageable for extended periods. In the aquascape it serves as a reliable, clean green filler that complements both coloured stem plants and foreground species.
Light: Low to medium (15–35 PAR); grows under almost any aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; among the most low-tech tolerant plants in the hobby. Fertilisation: Very minimal fertilisation needed; tolerates lean nutrient conditions. Placement: Midground to background; effective as a uniform green filler mass. Propagation: Cut 8–10 cm stems; roots easily and establishes under all conditions.
