Blyxa echinosperma
Also known as: Spiny-seed Blyxa, Fine Blyxa
Origin: South Asia, Southeast Asia
Blyxa echinosperma is native to South and Southeast Asia, growing in shallow, warm, soft-water habitats including rice paddies, ponds, and slow streams. Its leaves are finer and more delicate than those of B. japonica and B. aubertii, forming graceful, wispy tufts with a distinctly lacy texture. It requires similar conditions to other Blyxa species — soft to moderately hard water, warm temperatures, and ideally CO2 injection — but rewards good care with exceptionally refined, elegant growth. Its small stature (10–25 cm) makes it ideal for nano aquascapes and detailed midground arrangements where fine-textured plants create depth and visual interest.
Light: Medium to high (40–80 PAR); fine texture best expressed under good illumination. CO2: Recommended; supplementation is important for dense, healthy growth. Fertilisation: Weekly liquid fertiliser rich in iron and trace elements; root tabs every 3 months. Placement: Midground in nano or medium tanks; group tightly in odd numbers for natural appearance. Propagation: Basal side shoots; divide when side shoots have 4+ leaves and a developing root system.
