Blyxa japonica
Also known as: Japanese Rush, Japanese Blyxa
Origin: East Asia
Blyxa japonica is widely distributed in East and Southeast Asia, growing in rice paddies, ponds, and shallow streams. In aquariums it develops a characteristic rosette-like stem with narrow, light- to olive-green leaves that fan outward and slightly curve, creating an elegant, flowing appearance. Under high light it can develop a subtle golden-yellow tint. It is a medium-difficulty plant that benefits from CO2 and iron supplementation, and is particularly beloved in the Nature Aquarium style for the soft, organic movement its leaves bring to midground compositions.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); optional higher light adds golden tint to leaves. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; noticeably improves leaf density and growth form. Fertiliser: Regular balanced fertiliser plus iron; ensure adequate phosphorus for strong growth. Planting: Midground as individual plants or small groups; space 5 cm apart for natural spread. Growth: Moderate; 10–20 cm; graceful fan habit works best with sufficient spacing.
