Bolbitis difformis
Also known as: Small Bolbitis, Difformis Fern
Origin: Central Africa
Bolbitis difformis is a small, fascinating fern native to the tropical streams of Africa, where it grows as a rheophyte on submerged rocks and wood in flowing water. Its fronds are distinctly irregular and variable in shape — some leaves are simple, others are pinnatifid with differing degrees of lobing — giving each plant an organically wild appearance that is difficult to replicate with more uniform species.
Like other Bolbitis species, it is an epiphyte that must be attached to hardscape rather than planted in substrate. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water with moderate flow and performs best when CO2 is supplemented, though it will survive in low-tech conditions with slower growth. Under good conditions, plants develop a deep, translucent green coloration with visible venation.
This species is ideal for aquarists who want a small, unique fern with character. Its diminutive size suits nano aquariums perfectly, and it works well as a detailed accent on small stones or the smaller branches of a driftwood arrangement.
Light: Low to medium; too much light encourages algae on the slow-growing fronds. CO2: Beneficial; growth is noticeably faster and more robust with CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: Liquid micronutrients and trace elements weekly; this small plant has modest nutrient demands. Placement: Attach rhizome to small stones or fine driftwood branches in midground; suits nano setups. Propagation: Divide rhizome carefully ensuring each section retains at least 2 fronds; reattach to hardscape.
