Bolbitis heteroclita

Bolbitis heteroclita is an Asian species of water fern found across a range from India to the Philippines, where it grows as a rheophyte in moist, fast-flowing stream habitats. Compared to the more famous African Bolbitis heudelotii, this species is smaller and more compact, with irregularly lobed fronds that vary considerably in shape — some simple and entire, others pinnately lobed — giving each plant an organically wild appearance.

In the aquarium, B. heteroclita is cultivated identically to B. heudelotii: attach the rhizome to driftwood or stone, maintain low light and moderate flow, and supplement with CO2 where possible. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water and performs poorly in hard, alkaline conditions. Without CO2, growth is very slow but the plant remains healthy.

This species is valued for its compact size — it stays under 20 cm — making it more accessible for medium-sized tanks where the large African Water Fern would be too imposing. It pairs beautifully with Java Fern, Anubias nana, and fine mosses on a shared driftwood composition, adding a different leaf form without competing for space.

Light: Low; 15–35 µmol PAR — intense light promotes algae on the slow-growing fronds. CO2: Beneficial; noticeable improvement in growth rate and frond quality with supplemental CO2. Fertilisation: Regular liquid micronutrient and iron dosing; the plant feeds through its fronds. Placement: Attach to midground driftwood or stone; the compact size suits 50–100 L tanks. Propagation: Divide rhizome into sections of 2+ fronds; each propagule will establish slowly.
