Bolbitis heteroclita
Also known as: Difformis Water Fern, Mini Asian Fern, Dwarf Bolbitis
Origin: Asia
Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis' is a diminutive cultivar of the widespread Asian water fern Bolbitis heteroclita, distinguished by its irregularly shaped, often lobed or deformed fronds that create a highly textural, organic appearance. The name 'Difformis' refers to the variable, non-uniform frond morphology that makes each plant visually unique. It grows on a slender creeping rhizome that can be attached to fine-grained driftwood, smooth stones, or even left to drift.
This cultivar is particularly popular in nano and pico aquascapes where its small stature — typically 5–10 cm — allows it to serve as a midground or even foreground element. It tolerates low light well and grows without CO2, though very slowly. Clean, well-filtered water and occasional liquid fertiliser dosing are the keys to long-term success. It is a fragile but uniquely beautiful addition to any naturalistic planted tank.
Light: Low; intense light is not tolerated and will cause frond bleaching or algae. CO2: Not required; very slow growth is normal even with CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: Dilute liquid micronutrients every 2 weeks; avoid over-fertilisation in small tanks. Placement: Attach to small pieces of driftwood or pebbles in the foreground or midground; great for nano setups. Propagation: Carefully separate rhizome sections, each with 1–2 fronds; secure to new substrate with fine thread.
