Bolbitis heudelotii (African Water Fern)

Bolbitis heudelotii is a magnificent dark-green rheophytic fern with pinnate translucent leaves that shimmer in flowing water. Best attached to rocks or wood in areas with moderate flow. Grows slowly but rewards patience with spectacular prehistoric-looking fronds.

Attach rhizome to driftwood or rock using fishing line or aquarium glue — do not bury the rhizome. Moderate flow is important: still water causes rotting. CO2 injection and soft, slightly acidic water improve growth rate. Trim dead fronds near the rhizome. Propagate by rhizome division. Can tolerate low light but grows faster in medium light.
