Bolbitis heudelotii
Also known as: Large African Water Fern, Congo Fern, African Fern
Origin: Africa
Bolbitis heudelotii 'Large' is a selected robust form of the African water fern that develops impressively sized, deeply divided fronds with the characteristic glassy translucency that makes Bolbitis so visually striking. In high-flow aquariums the fronds wave gently in the current, creating a mesmerising effect reminiscent of its natural riverine habitat in tropical Africa. This large form can reach 40–50 cm and serves as a commanding background or mid-ground specimen.
Successful cultivation requires clean, well-oxygenated water and moderate to strong flow directed across the plant. The rhizome must be attached to hardscape and kept free of substrate. While CO2 is not strictly necessary, it dramatically improves vigour. Regular water changes and liquid fertilisation prevent the older fronds from yellowing. Slow-growing but exceptionally long-lived, it rewards patience with a lush, forest-like presence in mature aquascapes.
Light: Low to medium; the large fronds are prone to algae under high-intensity light without CO2. CO2: Highly recommended; significantly improves growth speed and the signature translucent frond quality. Fertilisation: Weekly liquid micro and macro dosing; iron and potassium are the most important elements. Placement: Attach rhizome to large driftwood or rocks in mid-to-background; position in areas of strong water flow. Propagation: Divide the rhizome into sections of 3–4 fronds each; secure firmly to hardscape with thread or glue.
