Bolbitis heudelotii
Also known as: Small African Water Fern, Dwarf Congo Fern
Origin: Africa
Bolbitis heudelotii 'Small' is a dwarf selection of the classic African water fern, prized for its more manageable size without sacrificing the stunning translucent quality of the species' fronds. Native to fast-flowing streams and rivers across tropical Africa, this fern attaches to hard substrates via a creeping rhizome and produces deeply pinnate, dark olive-green fronds with a characteristic glassy sheen when submerged. Its compact form makes it suitable for smaller aquascapes and nano layouts where the standard species would overwhelm.
Like all Bolbitis, this variety demands excellent water movement and high oxygen levels to prevent rhizome rot. It grows slowly under low-to-medium light and does not require CO2 injection, though supplemental CO2 noticeably accelerates growth and enhances the translucent leaf quality. It is best attached to driftwood or lava rock using cotton thread. Liquid micronutrient dosing supports healthy dark colouration.
Light: Low to medium; avoid intense direct light which can bleach the delicate fronds. CO2: Not required but beneficial; supplemental CO2 improves growth rate and frond translucency. Fertilisation: Dose liquid micronutrients regularly; iron is especially important for deep frond colour. Placement: Attach rhizome to driftwood or rock in areas of moderate to strong flow; never bury the rhizome. Propagation: Divide the creeping rhizome with a sharp blade ensuring each section has 2–3 fronds; re-attach to hardscape.
