Bolbitis heudelotii
Also known as: Special African Water Fern, Premium Congo Fern
Origin: Africa
Bolbitis heudelotii 'Special' is a trade designation applied to particularly well-grown, large, or exceptionally translucent specimens of the African water fern that surpass typical commercial quality. The 'Special' designation indicates fronds of superior clarity — the glassy translucency for which B. heudelotii is celebrated is maximised in these select plants — along with vigorous rhizomes and a full, dense frond display. It represents the best expression of the species in cultivation.
Care requirements are identical to standard B. heudelotii but to maintain the 'Special' quality, conditions must be optimal: soft, clean water with strong oxygenation, excellent flow across the rhizome, CO2 supplementation, and regular liquid fertilisation. Any compromise in water quality or flow tends to reduce the distinguishing translucency over time. This is the preferred choice for aquascaping competitions and high-end display tanks where only the finest plant specimens are acceptable.
Light: Low to medium; the superior translucency of 'Special' fronds is most visible under moderate, diffuse lighting. CO2: Essential for maintaining the premium frond quality; without CO2 the exceptional translucency will diminish. Fertilisation: Weekly liquid micro and macro dosing; iron and trace elements are critical for premium frond clarity. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in strong-flow areas; optimal water movement is essential for 'Special' quality. Propagation: Divide rhizome into generous sections of 3–4 fronds; maintain optimal conditions during the re-establishment period.
