Bolbitis sp.
Also known as: Asean Water Fern, Southeast Asian Bolbitis
Origin: Asia
Bolbitis sp. 'Asean' is a trade name applied to a group of undescribed or informally named Bolbitis species collected from Southeast Asia, characterised by their finely pinnate, bright to mid-green fronds that are somewhat more delicate in texture than the classic Bolbitis heudelotii. The fronds are elegantly divided and produce a feathery, lace-like effect when viewed against a dark background or illuminated from above.
This species is typically found attached to submerged rocks and roots in fast-moving streams. In the aquarium it appreciates the same conditions — good flow, soft to moderately hard water, and attachment to natural hardscape. It is slightly more tolerant of higher temperatures than some Bolbitis species, making it well-suited to tropical community tanks. CO2 injection is beneficial and accelerates the characteristically slow Bolbitis growth rate. A popular choice for Asian-themed biotope and nature-style aquascapes.
Light: Low to medium; the fine fronds are particularly susceptible to algae under high-intensity light without CO2. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 injection noticeably improves frond size and growth rate in this species. Fertilisation: Liquid micro and trace element dosing bi-weekly; soft water tanks benefit from additional potassium. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in mid-background areas with consistent water movement across the rhizome. Propagation: Divide rhizome ensuring each piece has 2–3 healthy fronds; attach to new hardscape with thread or gel glue.
