Bolbitis sp. 'Compact'
Also known as: Compact Bolbitis, Mini African Water Fern
Origin: Asia / Africa (cultivar selection)
Bolbitis sp. 'Compact' is a horticultural selection chosen for its more condensed growth habit compared to the sprawling full-size Bolbitis heudelotii. The fronds are proportionally similar to the African Water Fern — deeply lobed, dark green, and translucent in good light — but the plant stays considerably shorter and denser, making it accessible to aquarists with medium-sized tanks.
Like all Bolbitis, this plant should be attached to driftwood or rock with its rhizome exposed. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water, moderate flow, and benefits from CO2 supplementation for best growth. Without CO2 it will survive but growth will be very slow. Regular liquid fertilisation with iron and micronutrients supports healthy dark-green leaf colour.
Bolbitis sp. 'Compact' is excellent in Southeast Asian or African biotope tanks and in nature aquascapes as a textural midground plant. It combines particularly well with Anubias, Bucephalandra, and Java Fern on a shared driftwood composition.
Light: Low; excess light causes algae to colonise the slow-growing fronds. CO2: Beneficial; supplemental CO2 meaningfully improves growth rate and frond quality. Fertilisation: Weekly liquid micronutrients and iron; ensure adequate trace element levels. Placement: Attach rhizome to driftwood or rock in midground; group 2–3 plants together for a lush mound effect. Propagation: Separate rhizome into sections of 2+ fronds each; reattach to fresh hardscape with thread or glue.
