Ceratopteris cornuta
Also known as: Broadleaf Water Sprite, Broad Water Fern
Origin: Tropical Africa, Asia
Broadleaf Water Sprite (Ceratopteris cornuta) is a tropical African and Asian fern with wider, less finely dissected fronds compared to C. thalictroides, giving it a bolder, more substantial appearance. It is equally fast-growing and adaptable, thriving as either a floating surface plant or a rooted midground specimen. The broader fronds provide more effective surface shading for low-light fish and plants beneath.
Light: medium light; grows vigorously under moderate to bright conditions. CO2: not required; responds well to regular macro and micro fertiliser dosing. Placement: float for maximum growth rate or plant in substrate for structured midground display. Trimming: remove older, yellowing fronds; control floating spread by netting excess growth regularly. Growth: fast; propagates freely via leaf-tip plantlets.
