Bucephalandra 'Alamanda'

Bucephalandra 'Alamanda' stands out among the largely dark-toned Bucephalandra collection by offering fresh, bright-green foliage with a subtle silvery iridescent sheen rather than the more typical blue or violet. Named after the vibrant tropical Alamanda flower, it brings a sense of brightness and life to hardscape arrangements where darker companions can feel heavy.

The silvery sheen is most visible on young leaves as they emerge and reflects light with a clean, cool quality. Mature leaves maintain a rich bright-green colour that provides excellent contrast to dark mosses, dark Anubias, or black volcanic rock. The plant is moderately sized with leaves reaching 4–7 cm on a freely branching rhizome.

In care requirements, 'Alamanda' is slightly more forgiving than the premium dark cultivars, adapting reasonably to moderate water hardness and performing adequately even without CO2, though supplementation improves results noticeably. It is an accessible cultivar for aquascapers wanting Bucephalandra beauty without the full technical setup.

Light: low to medium; bright green colour intensity is best under medium light; adequate at low light with slightly muted tones. CO2: recommended for best results; noticeably more leaf production with CO2 though the plant survives without it. Fertilisation: moderate liquid fertiliser with nitrogen and potassium supports the bright green colouration; iron less critical than for red varieties. Placement: foreground to midground on dark hardscape or against dark substrates to maximise the bright-green contrast. Propagation: freely branching rhizome provides good propagation material; divide into 2–3 leaf sections and reattach.
