Bucephalandra sp. 'Apple Leaf'
Also known as: Apple Leaf Buce, Apple Leaf Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Apple Leaf' is named for the rounded, fresh-apple-green quality of its leaves — a departure from the teardrop or elongated forms of many Bucephalandra varieties. The rounded leaf outline and apple-green colouration give it a friendly, approachable appearance that integrates naturally into nature-style aquascapes without the high-drama visual impact of darker, more intense cultivars.
The iridescence on 'Apple Leaf' is gentle and green-toned rather than strongly blue or violet, contributing to its softer overall aesthetic. New leaves emerge with a slight pinkish blush that transitions to apple-green as they mature. The plant is medium-sized within the genus and produces a freely spreading rhizome that can cover attractive areas of hardscape over time.
It is a recommended cultivar for aquascapers who want the inherent quality and elegance of Bucephalandra without sacrificing naturalness for spectacle. It pairs beautifully with Java fern, fine mosses, and smooth pebble hardscape.
Light: low to medium; soft green iridescence is pleasantly visible under a range of lighting conditions. CO2: recommended; CO2 supplementation produces meaningfully more frequent leaf production for this genus. Fertilisation: light to moderate liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks; balanced macro and micro nutrition supports the fresh green colouration. Placement: foreground to midground on smooth pebbles or rounded driftwood; rounded leaves complement organic, flowing aquascape styles. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections; 'Apple Leaf' spreads moderately freely and provides usable propagation material.
