Bucephalandra 'Black Pearl'

Bucephalandra 'Black Pearl' earns its name from the extraordinary combination of near-black leaf colour and a lustrous, pearl-like iridescent sheen across the entire leaf surface. Unlike other dark Bucephalandra varieties where the iridescence is localised to the centre or edges, 'Black Pearl' displays a full-surface pearlescent quality that shifts through blue, teal, and violet under changing light angles. The effect is most dramatic under strong LED spotlighting.

This is a premium cultivar best suited to aquascapers comfortable with the requirements of high-end Bucephalandra: soft, slightly acidic water, CO2 injection, and medium lighting. Without these conditions the plant survives but loses much of its visual drama as the iridescence becomes muted. Water temperature should be maintained in the mid-range of its tolerance.

As a display plant, 'Black Pearl' is most effective as a solitary statement specimen on a single dramatic piece of hardscape, or in a small group of three to five plants where the collective iridescence creates an immersive visual pool of dark, glowing foliage.

Light: medium lighting required; the pearlescent full-surface iridescence is the defining feature and requires adequate light to manifest. CO2: strongly recommended; CO2 supplementation is necessary to unlock the full visual potential of this premium cultivar. Fertilisation: light micronutrient dosing in soft water; avoid excess which promotes algae on these spectacular, slow-growing leaves. Placement: solo specimen or small group on a single dramatic rock or driftwood piece; spotlight directly above maximises pearl effect. Propagation: divide rhizome only when well established; each section needs 2–3 leaves minimum — do not over-harvest this slow grower.
