Bucephalandra sp. 'Brownie Blue'
Also known as: Brownie Blue Buce, Blue Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Brownie Blue' is distinguished from other 'Brownie' group cultivars by the intensity and consistency of its blue iridescence — under appropriate medium lighting the leaves appear to glow with an electric blue sheen layered over a deep chocolate-brown base colour. This effect is maximised under white LED spotlights at angles that catch the nanostructured leaf surface.
In terms of growth and care, 'Brownie Blue' follows the typical Bucephalandra pattern: a slowly creeping rhizome that anchors to hard surfaces, slow leaf production under low light accelerating modestly with CO2 and medium light, and a preference for soft, slightly acidic water. It is fully compatible with low-tech setups but rewards investment in CO2 and good lighting with more impressive leaf production.
This cultivar is particularly popular in nano and micro aquascapes where a single stunning plant can serve as the entire focal point. It pairs exceptionally well with pale volcanic rock or white sand substrate that contrasts sharply with the dark, iridescent leaves.
Light: medium light preferred; white-spectrum LED spotlights at a slight angle maximise the blue iridescent effect. CO2: recommended; CO2 injection noticeably improves leaf production frequency and rhizome branching. Fertilisation: light liquid micronutrient dosing every 2–4 weeks; avoid over-fertilisation in soft-water setups. Placement: foreground or midground on pale rock or driftwood; dark leaves contrast best against light-coloured hardscape. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections; allow a brief drying period on cut surfaces before reattaching.
