Bucephalandra sp. 'Brownie Phantom'
Also known as: Brownie Phantom Buce, Phantom Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Brownie Phantom' takes the dark aesthetic of the Brownie group to its extreme, producing leaves that are so deeply pigmented they appear almost black under standard aquarium lighting. Under directional medium-intensity light, a haunting iridescent halo emerges around the leaf edges and across the surface — a ghostly effect that fully justifies the name.
The plant grows in the same fashion as other Bucephalandra — slowly creeping rhizome, epiphytic attachment to hardscape, preference for soft slightly acidic water. The very dark colouration is best appreciated against a light background or pale substrate such as white sand or light-coloured gravel. Against dark substrates, 'Brownie Phantom' can nearly disappear, which may or may not be the desired effect.
This cultivar is among the most coveted Brownie group variants and commands interest from serious collectors. It works beautifully as a solitary specimen in a nano tank or as a dark contrast element within a mixed Bucephalandra collection on a feature stone.
Light: medium light required to reveal the full iridescent quality; low light leaves the plant looking simply very dark. CO2: recommended; CO2 supplementation is the single most effective way to improve leaf production in this slow cultivar. Fertilisation: minimal liquid micronutrient dosing sufficient; sensitive to excess nutrients in soft-water conditions. Placement: foreground on pale-coloured hardscape or white sand substrate to maximise the dark-leaf contrast effect. Propagation: carefully cut rhizome into sections of 2–3 leaves; this is a slow-growing cultivar — allow time for re-establishment.
