Bucephalandra sp. 'Crocodile'
Also known as: Crocodile Buce, Crocodile Bucephalandra, Scaly Buce
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Crocodile' is named for the pronounced, rough, scaly texture of its leaf surface — a texture more extreme than the corrugation seen in coffeefolia Anubias, giving the leaves an almost reptilian quality when viewed closely. This unusual surface texture combined with the genus's characteristic iridescence creates a fascinating visual and tactile complexity that photographs exceptionally well.
The scaly texture means the leaf surface interacts with light in a highly complex way, creating micro-shadows and highlights across the entire leaf that shift as the viewing angle changes. Under strong lighting the overall impression is of a dark, glowing, textured jewel mounted on the aquascape.
Given the unusual leaf structure, 'Crocodile' is best placed in the foreground where its textural detail can be appreciated. Care requirements follow the standard Bucephalandra protocol with soft slightly acidic water being particularly important for maintaining the richness of the dark leaf colour that makes the scaly texture most visible.
Light: medium light showcases the scaly surface texture to best effect through complex shadow and highlight patterns. CO2: recommended; CO2 supplementation supports steady leaf production in this medium-difficulty cultivar. Fertilisation: light to moderate liquid micronutrient dosing; iron availability maintains the dark colour that best displays the leaf texture. Placement: foreground centrepiece on a single dramatic stone where the scaly leaf texture is visible to the observer. Propagation: divide rhizome carefully into 2–3 leaf sections; the textured leaves are fragile — handle with care during propagation.
