Bucephalandra sp. 'Dollman'
Also known as: Dollman Buce, Dollman Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Dollman' is a compact, approachable cultivar that offers Bucephalandra elegance in a manageable, freely branching package. Its petite, dark-green leaves are 2–4 cm and display a subtle but consistent iridescent sheen across the upper surface. What sets 'Dollman' apart is its relatively free-branching rhizome habit — it produces lateral rhizome branches more readily than many other cultivars, making it one of the more rewarding Bucephalandra varieties to propagate and distribute across hardscape.
The plant integrates naturally into a wide range of aquascape styles — its compact size suits nano tanks, its dark leaf colour complements both pale and dark hardscape, and its willingness to branch and spread across rock surfaces creates pleasing naturalistic colonisation effects over time.
For aquascapers new to Bucephalandra who want a species that will produce propagation material within a reasonable timeframe rather than testing patience over many months, 'Dollman' is an excellent choice. Care requirements are standard for the genus.
Light: low to medium; versatile across a range of light conditions, making it one of the more accessible Bucephalandra cultivars. CO2: recommended; CO2 meaningfully improves the branching frequency that makes this cultivar valuable for propagation. Fertilisation: light to moderate liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks; consistent micronutrient availability supports steady branching growth. Placement: foreground on small to medium rocks; the branching habit allows the plant to naturally colonise hardscape over time. Propagation: detach lateral rhizome branches once they have 2–3 leaves; one of the more freely propagated Bucephalandra varieties.
