Bucephalandra sp. Kedagang
Also known as: Bucephalandra Kedagang, Buce Kedagang
Origin: Southeast Asia (Borneo)
Bucephalandra sp. 'Kedagang' is one of the most distinctive and admired Bucephalandra varieties in the aquarium hobby, named after a collecting locality in Borneo. It distinguishes itself from other Buce varieties through its relatively elongated, dark green to near-black leaves that develop a striking blue-violet to purple iridescent sheen under appropriate lighting conditions. The contrast between the deep, dark base color and the vivid metallic shimmer is extraordinary and unlike most other aquatic plants. Kedagang grows as a compact rhizomatous cluster that attaches firmly to hardscape via rhizoids and never roots into substrate. Individual leaves are smooth-margined to very slightly wavy, broader and more paddle-shaped than the Green Wavy variety, giving it a distinctly different structural character while sharing the iridescent quality. Like all Bucephalandra, it is endemic to the island of Borneo, where it inhabits fast-flowing, clear, mineral-poor rivers and streams in tropical rainforest environments. In the aquarium, it performs best in soft, slightly acidic water that replicates its native blackwater conditions. Growth is very slow — under good conditions with CO2 and micronutrient dosing, one to two new leaves per month is typical. This slow pace, combined with its exceptional appearance, has made it a collector's item and a standout specimen plant in high-end aquariums. Once established on a piece of driftwood or stone, it forms increasingly lush clusters that accumulate into spectacular colony arrangements over months and years.
Placement and Attachment Glue or tie Kedagang to driftwood or smooth stone using cyanoacrylate gel. Avoid substrate burial of the rhizome. Position in mid-flow areas — Kedagang benefits from gentle to moderate current that keeps leaves clean and oxygenated.
Lighting Moderate light (20–40 µmol/m²/s PAR) reveals the best blue-violet iridescence. Blue-spectrum LED lighting particularly enhances the metallic shimmer. Avoid excessively high light without CO2.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 injection at 20–30 ppm is strongly recommended. Weekly dosing of micronutrient-rich liquid fertilizer, particularly with iron and potassium, maximizes color depth and iridescence.
Water Conditions Prefers pH 5.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C. Soft, slightly acidic water mimics native Bornean streams. Avoid hard, alkaline conditions. Gradual, regular water changes (20–30% weekly) maintain stability.
Leaf Melt Management Leaf die-back following introduction or parameter changes is possible. Remove affected leaves promptly. The rhizome recovers reliably under stable conditions.
Propagation Divide rhizome sections bearing 3+ leaves and re-attach to hardscape. Allow attachment to stabilize before repositioning.
Common Issues Algae colonization on slow-growing leaves is the chief concern — balance nutrients and ensure adequate flow. Fading iridescence indicates micronutrient deficiency, especially iron.
