Bucephalandra sp. 'Kedagang'
Also known as: Kedagang Buce, Kedagang Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kedagang River, Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Kedagang' is arguably the most widely known and kept Bucephalandra variety, having entered mainstream availability earlier than many other cultivars. Collected from the Kedagang river in Kalimantan, it produces medium-sized, elliptical to slightly elongated leaves with a glossy dark-green surface and a consistent, vivid blue iridescence that is among the most reliably striking in the genus.
Its relative accessibility and slightly more forgiving growth requirements compared to rarer cultivars make 'Kedagang' the ideal first Bucephalandra for aquascapers new to the genus. It adapts to a wider range of water hardness than many of its relatives and produces new leaves at a modest but steady pace under medium light with CO2.
In aquascape compositions, 'Kedagang' serves excellently as a signature midground plant on a prominent stone or piece of driftwood. A group of several plants with rhizomes arranged on a single large rock creates a lush, iridescent feature that anchors the entire layout visually.
Light: low to medium; the signature blue iridescence is most vivid under medium-intensity directional white-spectrum LED. CO2: recommended; CO2 injection gives a reliable improvement in leaf production for this variety. Fertilisation: light to moderate liquid fertiliser with micronutrients; consistent iron availability supports deep leaf colour. Placement: midground on prominent rocks or driftwood; allow each plant space to spread its rhizome freely. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections with a clean cut; one of the more freely branching Bucephalandra varieties.
