About

Bucephalandra 'Rainbow' is the most chromatically diverse cultivar in the genus, producing leaves that display a genuine spectrum of colours depending on the lighting direction, intensity, and viewing angle. A single leaf can present green, teal, blue, violet, and red-purple tones simultaneously across different sections of its surface, creating a shifting chromatic display that is genuinely unique in the planted aquarium world.

The multi-tone iridescence is produced by nanostructural features at the leaf surface in combination with underlying pigmentation — a combination that is only fully expressed under medium-to-bright directional lighting. Under low diffuse light the rainbow effect diminishes significantly and the leaves present as simply very dark green. This makes appropriate lighting particularly important for this cultivar.

Due to its extraordinary visual properties and rarity, 'Rainbow' commands premium pricing and is sought by collectors worldwide. It is best treated as a feature specimen in a dedicated high-tech planted aquarium where CO2, soft water, and quality lighting can showcase its full chromatic potential.

Care Guide

Light: medium to bright directional light essential; the multi-toned rainbow iridescence requires adequate light intensity to manifest fully. CO2: strongly recommended; CO2 injection is critical for consistent leaf production and the deep pigmentation underlying the colour shifts. Fertilisation: light micronutrient dosing in very soft water; water quality and CO2 are more important than fertilisation intensity. Placement: foreground solo specimen under a dedicated spotlight; position to allow viewing from multiple angles to experience the full rainbow effect. Propagation: divide only well-established plants into 2–3 leaf sections; rainbow iridescence quality is fully retained in healthy divisions.
