Bucephalandra sp. 'Sintang'
Also known as: Sintang Buce, Sintang Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Sintang, Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Sintang' originates from around the Sintang regency in West Kalimantan and is characterised by its somewhat elongated, narrow-oval leaves with a dark olive-green base colour and a refined metallic sheen that is less dramatically blue than some cultivars but more subtly sophisticated. This understated elegance makes it particularly appealing to aquascapers who prefer restraint over showiness.
The elongated leaf form gives 'Sintang' a slightly different visual rhythm compared to broader Bucephalandra varieties, and it integrates well into layouts with other narrow-leafed species or as a counterpoint to round-leafed Anubias. Growth rate is typical for the genus — slow under low light, modestly improved with CO2 and medium light.
Sintang adapts reasonably well to moderate water hardness, making it accessible to hobbyists without RO water setups. It is a rewarding long-term resident of any planted aquarium, gradually expanding its rhizome across chosen hardscape over months and years.
Light: low to medium; the metallic sheen is best appreciated under overhead medium-intensity lighting. CO2: recommended for consistent leaf production; tolerated without CO2 but growth becomes very slow. Fertilisation: light liquid micronutrient dosing every 3–4 weeks; not demanding in terms of nutrient requirements. Placement: midground on textured rocks or driftwood; elongated leaves pair well with round-leafed plants for visual contrast. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections; moderately slow to re-establish after division.
