Bucephalandra sp.
Also known as: Brownie Ghost Bucephalandra, Ghost Bucephalandra, Pale Bucephalandra
Origin: Asia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Brownie Ghost' is one of the most unusually coloured Bucephalandra varieties, named for its pale, ghostly leaf colouration that ranges from light green to near-translucent with prominent white or silver iridescent patches and spotting across the leaf surface. The 'brownie' component of the name refers to the slight brownish or bronze tint occasionally visible in new leaves under certain lighting. The effect is ethereal and quite unlike typical Bucephalandra colouration.
This variety is a genuine collector's plant and commands premium prices. It is moderately demanding — soft, very clean water is essential as the pale, thin leaf tissue is sensitive to algae and water quality fluctuations. CO2 is strongly recommended to maintain growth and leaf clarity. The ghostly pale colouration can fade to standard green if conditions are suboptimal, so consistent attention to water chemistry is important. It is most spectacular in heavily planted, CO2-injected setups with full-spectrum LED lighting.
Light: Medium; full-spectrum lighting is essential to display the ghostly white iridescent patches properly. CO2: Strongly recommended; CO2 injection maintains the distinctive pale, translucent leaf quality. Fertilisation: Weekly dilute liquid micronutrients; the pale leaves are sensitive to trace element deficiencies. Placement: Attach to smooth driftwood or light-coloured stone in a well-lit midground position in a stable, clean tank. Propagation: Divide rhizome very carefully into 2-leaf sections; pale leaf tissue is fragile; handle minimally.
