Bucephalandra sp. 'Copper Leaf'

Bucephalandra sp. 'Copper Leaf' is named for the remarkable warm copper-to-bronze colouration of newly emerging leaves, which gradually transition through reddish-brown to a mature deep-green with iridescent overlay as they fully develop. The contrast between the bright copper new growth and the darker iridescent adult leaves on a single plant creates a visually striking, two-toned display that sets this variety apart from most other Bucephalandra. Leaves are medium-sized, 3–5 cm, with a slightly ovate shape.

The copper colouration of new growth is most intense in plants maintained in soft, slightly acidic water with good CO2 levels and consistent liquid fertilisation containing iron. Under poor conditions or in hard water the copper tone fades to a nondescript reddish-brown before greening up. Like other Bucephalandra, it grows slowly on a creeping rhizome and requires attachment to hardscape. It is a popular variety for aquascapers who appreciate colour progression in their plants.

Light: Low to medium; moderate light is needed to fully express the copper new-growth colouration. CO2: Recommended; CO2 injection intensifies the copper tone of new leaves and improves overall plant vigour. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micronutrients with emphasis on iron and manganese to maintain the copper leaf colouration. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in a well-lit midground position where the two-toned colouration is clearly visible. Propagation: Divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections; re-attach to fresh hardscape; the copper tone returns once new growth resumes.
