Bucephalandra sp.
Also known as: Isabella Bucephalandra, Silver Bucephalandra
Origin: Asia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Isabella' is a named collector's variety distinguished by its softly ovate to elliptical leaves with smooth margins and a delicate, consistent silver or white iridescent sheen across the dark-green leaf surface. The iridescence of 'Isabella' tends toward silver-white rather than blue, giving it a softer, more understated elegance compared to the vivid metallic varieties like 'Theia'. Leaves reach 3–5 cm and are produced on a compact, slowly creeping rhizome.
This variety is well-regarded among collectors for its reliable iridescence and relatively consistent behaviour across a range of soft-water conditions. It grows slowly but steadily and is a rewarding long-term project for the planted tank enthusiast. CO2 supplementation and consistent liquid fertilisation bring out the best in 'Isabella', but it is somewhat more forgiving than the most demanding Bucephalandra varieties. It pairs beautifully with other collector Bucephalandra in curated epiphyte displays.
Light: Low to medium; the silver iridescence of 'Isabella' is best seen under moderate, full-spectrum lighting. CO2: Recommended; improves growth rate and the consistency of the silver-white iridescent display. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micronutrients; maintain adequate iron and trace elements for healthy leaf colouration. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks; pairs well with other Bucephalandra varieties in collector-style displays. Propagation: Divide rhizome into 2-leaf sections; re-attach to fresh hardscape with thread; allow ample establishment time.
