Bucephalandra sp.
Also known as: Lamandau Mini Red, Red Lamandau Bucephalandra
Origin: Asia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Lamandau Mini Red' originates from the Lamandau River drainage in Central Kalimantan, Borneo, and is celebrated for its spectacular red-tinted new growth that gradually transitions to deep green with a pronounced blue or silver iridescence as leaves mature. The contrast between the bright red emerging leaves and the iridescent adult leaves on the same plant creates a visually dynamic display that few aquatic plants can match. Leaves are small, 2–4 cm, and the plant remains compact.
This is a collector-grade Bucephalandra variety that commands higher prices and requires careful attention to water quality. It performs best in very soft, slightly acidic conditions with CO2 supplementation and regular but dilute liquid fertilisation. It is sensitive to sudden water parameter changes and may sulk or drop leaves if conditions fluctuate. Once established in a stable, well-maintained tank, it grows steadily and becomes an exceptional showpiece plant.
Light: Low to medium; adequate light is needed to maintain the vivid red new-growth colour and adult iridescence. CO2: Strongly recommended; CO2 is essential for achieving the best colour expression in this variety. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly dilute liquid micronutrients; iron and potassium are the most critical elements for colour. Placement: Attach to small driftwood or rocks in a stable, well-filtered tank; avoid positions with highly variable flow. Propagation: Divide rhizome into sections of 2 leaves; re-attach carefully to hardscape; avoid disturbing during establishment.
