Bucephalandra sp. 'Mini Coin'
Also known as: Mini Coin Buce, Coin Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo, Indonesia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Mini Coin' is a small rheophytic plant from the rainforest streams of Borneo, belonging to the highly diverse and collectable Bucephalandra genus. Its leaves are distinctively near-circular — almost coin-shaped — with smooth margins and a subtle metallic or iridescent sheen under aquarium lighting that sets it apart from most other small epiphytes. Plants stay compact, reaching only 8 cm at most.
Like all Bucephalandra, 'Mini Coin' grows from a creeping rhizome that should be attached to driftwood, stone, or hardscape above the substrate. It thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with low to moderate light, and while it will grow without CO2 supplementation, supplemental CO2 noticeably improves growth rate and leaf quality. It is considerably more forgiving than many Buce varieties.
Bucephalandra 'Mini Coin' is ideal for nano aquariums and detailed aquascapes where its small stature and neat, round leaves add a refined, jewel-like accent. It pairs beautifully with fine mosses and small-leaved Anubias varieties in low-light, low-tech setups.
Light: Low; 15–40 µmol PAR; intense light tends to promote algae on the slow-growing leaves. CO2: Beneficial; optional but improves growth rate and leaf iridescence noticeably. Fertilisation: Weekly liquid micronutrients; additional iron and potassium support healthy leaf development. Placement: Attach rhizome to small stones or fine driftwood in foreground or midground; ideal for nano tanks. Propagation: Divide rhizome into sections of 2+ leaves and reattach; Buce propagates slowly but reliably.
