Bucephalandra sp.
Also known as: Sekadau Mini Bucephalandra, Mini Spotted Bucephalandra
Origin: Asia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Sekadau Mini' is a diminutive form from the Sekadau River drainage of West Kalimantan, Borneo, combining the attractive spotting and iridescence characteristic of the Sekadau lineage with a miniaturised plant body. Leaves are tiny — typically 1–2 cm — and display the characteristic Sekadau white-spot patterning and blue-green iridescent overlay. The plant grows on an extremely fine, slowly creeping rhizome suitable for attachment to very small pieces of hardscape.
This is a collector-grade miniature plant particularly well-suited to nano aquascapes under 20 litres, where its tiny scale creates the impression of a full-sized plant in miniature. It is more demanding than common Anubias or Java ferns, requiring soft water, clean conditions, and ideally CO2 supplementation. Its extraordinary scale and detail make it one of the most prized Bucephalandra variants for nano aquascaping competitions. Patience is essential — growth is exceptionally slow even by Bucephalandra standards.
Light: Low; the tiny leaves are very sensitive to algae and must be kept in shaded or low-light conditions. CO2: Recommended; CO2 supplementation at low levels improves growth and maintains the iridescent spotting quality. Fertilisation: Very dilute liquid micronutrients; over-fertilisation causes algae on the slow-growing miniature leaves. Placement: Attach to micro-hardscape pieces in the foreground of nano tanks; ideal for pico and shrimp-only setups. Propagation: Carefully divide the fine rhizome into sections retaining 1–2 leaves each; re-attach with the finest thread available.
