Bucephalandra sp. 'Theia'

Bucephalandra sp. 'Theia' is a highly regarded collector's variety named for the striking, almost metallic quality of its blue iridescence, evoking the mythological Titaness of sight and light. The leaves are broad, rounded, and deep green, with a consistent and intense metallic-blue or violet-blue iridescent sheen that is among the most spectacular in the genus. Leaves reach 3–6 cm and are produced on a slowly creeping rhizome characteristic of all Bucephalandra.

This is an advanced-level Bucephalandra variety that commands premium prices and requires excellent water quality to maintain its extraordinary iridescent display. It is intolerant of high hardness, elevated KH, or nutrient deficiencies, any of which can cause the iridescence to fade and leaves to yellow. CO2 injection, consistent liquid fertilisation, and regular partial water changes are essential. In ideal conditions it is one of the most beautiful aquatic plants available, and an absolute showpiece for specialist planted tanks and aquascaping competition displays.

Light: Medium; the metallic-blue iridescence requires adequate full-spectrum light to display at its brilliant best. CO2: Essential for premium results; CO2 injection maintains the metallic iridescence and consistent leaf production. Fertilisation: Weekly dilute liquid micronutrients; trace elements, iron, and potassium are critical for colour maintenance. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in a stable, well-lit tank; position for maximum light exposure on the leaf surface. Propagation: Divide rhizome very carefully into 2-leaf sections; any disturbance can trigger leaf drop in sensitive specimens.
