Bucephalandra sp.
Also known as: Wavy Leaf Bucephalandra, Ruffled Bucephalandra
Origin: Asia
Bucephalandra sp. 'Wavy Leaf' is one of the most widely available and popular Bucephalandra varieties, recognised immediately by its characteristically undulating or wavy leaf margins that give each leaf an attractive ruffled appearance. The leaves are mid-to-deep green with a subtle iridescent sheen, and the wave pattern along the margins becomes more pronounced under good growing conditions with CO2 and adequate nutrients. It is a medium-sized variety with leaves reaching 4–6 cm.
The undulating leaf margins create excellent visual texture in the aquarium and contrast beautifully with smooth-leaved plants like Anubias or standard Java fern. 'Wavy Leaf' is regarded as one of the hardier and more adaptable Bucephalandra varieties — it tolerates a broader range of water parameters than many of the rarer collector forms and grows slightly faster. It remains a first choice for aquascapers seeking to add Bucephalandra to a layout without the high price or extreme care demands of rare collector varieties.
Light: Low to medium; medium light enhances the wave pattern and iridescence of the leaves. CO2: Recommended; CO2 injection significantly improves the distinctiveness of the wavy leaf margins. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micronutrients; the wavy leaf pattern is most pronounced in nutrient-sufficient conditions. Placement: Attach to driftwood or rocks in midground; the undulating margins display best under direct frontal lighting. Propagation: Divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections and re-attach to hardscape; re-establishment takes 4–8 weeks.
