About

Bucephalandra 'Titan' is the apex of scale in the Bucephalandra genus, producing leaves that can reach 10–15 cm in length on a robust, expansive rhizome system capable of covering large areas of hardscape. For a genus of normally jewel-scale plants, 'Titan' occupies a truly different size category — the equivalent, in Bucephalandra terms, of Anubias gigantea in the Anubias world. Yet despite its scale, it retains the full iridescent quality of the genus with intense shifting highlights across every broad leaf.

The leaf surface combines the size to make the iridescence visible from a distance with the fine optical structure to reward close inspection. Under medium LED lighting, 'Titan' can appear to emanate light from its leaf surfaces, the iridescence distributed across such a large area that it genuinely illuminates its surrounding hardscape with reflected colour.

Given its size, 'Titan' requires a tank of at least 60 litres to display comfortably, with ample hardscape for its rhizome to colonise. It is a long-term commitment plant that grows slowly into a spectacular, permanent centrepiece. Once fully established on a large piece of driftwood or a prominent boulder, it is one of the most impressive aquatic plant specimens attainable in the hobby.

Care Guide

Light: low to medium; the large leaf area provides the iridescence visible even at a distance, but medium light maximises intensity. CO2: recommended; CO2 supplementation is most impactful for 'Titan' given the significant leaf size requiring active photosynthesis to sustain. Fertilisation: moderate liquid macro and micro fertiliser dosing to support the large leaf biomass; this is the most nutritionally demanding Bucephalandra on this list. Placement: midground to background on large driftwood or a prominent boulder; allow ample space for the rhizome to colonise and expand over time. Propagation: divide well-established rhizome into sections of 2–3 large leaves; the substantial rhizome diameter requires a strong sharp blade.
