Bucephalandra sp. 'Wavy Green'
Also known as: Wavy Green Buce, Green Wave Bucephalandra
Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan)
Bucephalandra 'Wavy Green' stands apart from the many dark-toned Bucephalandra cultivars by its fresh, bright-green colouration and the pronounced waviness of its leaf margins. The undulated edges catch light from multiple angles, giving the plant a lively, animated quality when viewed in flowing water. It is one of the more accessible and relatively faster-growing Bucephalandra varieties, making it a good entry point into the genus.
Originating from Kalimantan's clear rivers, 'Wavy Green' adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions. It tolerates slightly harder water better than some other Bucephalandra and performs adequately in low-tech setups, though CO2 and medium light produce noticeably denser, more attractive growth. The bright green colour makes it a strong contrasting element against dark mosses or dark-toned Anubias or Bucephalandra neighbours.
The wavy margins are a stable genetic trait and do not flatten out under different care conditions. New leaves emerge with a slight pink blush that fades to bright green as the leaf matures, adding a transient accent of colour during active growth periods.
Light: low to medium; medium light enhances the green intensity and highlights the wavy leaf margins. CO2: recommended; CO2 provides a meaningful improvement in leaf production frequency for this genus. Fertilisation: balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks; the bright green colouration is best maintained with adequate nitrogen and potassium. Placement: foreground or midground on rocks or wood; wavy leaves display best when positioned to catch side-on flow. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections and reattach; faster to re-establish than many other Bucephalandra varieties.
