Butomus umbellatus
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands/Belgium)
Butomus umbellatus is one of the most beautiful native Dutch and Belgian pond plants, producing elegant umbrella-like clusters of rose-pink three-petalled flowers on tall rush-like stems in July and August. Excellent for natural wildlife ponds. Plant in up to 25 cm of water for best flowering.
Plant in marginal zone at water depth 5–25 cm in full sun. Thrives in clay or loam soil — avoid pure gravel which lacks nutrients. Divide every 2–3 years to maintain vigour. Remove dead flower heads to prevent self-seeding. Hardy to -20°C. Excellent for pollinators and native pond habitats. Avoid planting in flowing water as it prefers still conditions.
