Cabomba caroliniana
Also known as: Green Cabomba, Green Fanwort, Fish Grass
Origin: North / South America
Cabomba caroliniana is native to North and South America and has been a staple aquarium plant for well over a century. Its distinctive opposite fan-shaped leaves, with finely divided green segments, give it a uniquely airy and delicate appearance. It grows quickly under medium light and is excellent for creating spawning sites for egg-scattering fish and sheltering fry. While not the most demanding plant, it dislikes excessive turbulence and benefits from gentle flow and regular pruning.
Light: Medium (25–60 PAR); grows without CO2 but benefits from moderate lighting. CO2: Not required; optional CO2 improves growth compactness and leaf density. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser; responds well to adequate potassium. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems; gentle flow preferred; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Fast; 20–80 cm; one of the most vigorous background plants available.
