Cabomba caroliniana 'Purple'
Also known as: Purple Cabomba, Purple Fanwort
Origin: North / South America (cultivar)
Cabomba caroliniana 'Purple' is a colour form of the classic Green Cabomba that produces a distinctive purple-green tint across its finely divided, fan-shaped whorled leaves under strong lighting. While Green Cabomba remains pure bright green, this form offers aquascapers a subtle variation in colour palette while retaining the familiar, fast-growing, feathery texture that has made Cabomba a staple aquarium plant for decades. It is slightly more demanding than standard C. caroliniana, benefiting from moderate CO2 and brighter light to express its purplish tones. An excellent choice for planted tanks where a textural and colour variation within the Cabomba group is desired.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); purple tint appears under stronger lighting. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; optional but improves growth compactness. Fertilisation: Regular macro and micro fertilisation; moderate nutrient demands. Placement: Background; effective as a softening textural mass behind hardscape. Propagation: Cut 10–15 cm stem tips; roots quickly in substrate or floating briefly.
