Callitriche palustris
Also known as: Water Starwort, Vernal Water Starwort
Origin: Europe / North America / Asia
Callitriche palustris is a widespread aquatic plant found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America in cool, clear streams and ponds. In its submerged form it produces small, opposite leaves and star-shaped surface rosettes, creating a gently carpeting plant with a light, open appearance. It is best suited to cool-water aquariums and does not thrive in warm tropical conditions. Its undemanding nature and botanical interest make it a rewarding choice for temperate planted tank enthusiasts.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); tolerates moderate light well in cool water. CO2: Beneficial but not required; performs adequately with liquid fertilisation in low-tech cool tanks. Planting: Plant stem clusters or rosette portions 3–4 cm apart in fine substrate at the foreground. Maintenance: Trim tops to prevent surface mat formation if desired; otherwise allow surface rosettes to develop naturally. Note: Best suited to cool water (15–22°C); do not attempt in warm tropical tanks above 24°C.
