Carex pseudocyperus
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands/Belgium)
Carex pseudocyperus is a striking native sedge of Dutch and Belgian wetlands, forming clumps of bright green arching leaves topped with nodding spiky cylindrical flowerheads that resemble cyperus and persist decoratively into autumn. Excellent for naturalised and wildlife ponds suited to shallow water up to 15 cm deep. Provides pond bird nesting cover.
Plant in marginal zone at water depth 0–15 cm in partial shade to full sun. Prefers loam or clay substrate. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigour. Very hardy — overwinters reliably in Belgian/Dutch conditions. Provides excellent cover for frogs, newts, and aquatic invertebrates. Leave seed heads over winter for wildlife.
