Ceratopteris thalictroides
Origin: Pantropical (worldwide)
Ceratopteris thalictroides (Water Sprite) is a fast-growing aquatic fern with finely divided bright green fronds that can be planted in substrate or left floating freely at the surface. It naturally produces numerous adventitious plantlets directly on its leaves, allowing easy propagation without any effort. One of the best live plants for cycling new aquariums and for providing immediate fry cover.
Can be planted in substrate at 5–7 cm depth or floated. Moderate lighting (0.5 W/L or equivalent LED) is sufficient; no CO2 required though it accelerates growth. Remove daughter plantlets when they develop 2–3 leaves to replant or share. Trim regularly to allow light to reach lower plants.
