Crepidomanes bipunctatum
Also known as: Twin-spot Filmy Fern, Dwarf Filmy Fern, Emerald Cushion Fern
Origin: Asia
Crepidomanes bipunctatum is a delicate filmy fern closely related to C. malabaricum, forming small, cushion-like mats of finely branched, translucent fronds of bright emerald green. The fronds are one cell thick in the characteristic Hymenophyllaceae manner and display exceptional translucency when backlit. It is native to shaded, humid environments in tropical and subtropical Asia, typically colonising wet rock surfaces, bark, and submerged wood near waterfalls and forest streams.
This species is even more diminutive than C. malabaricum and is best suited to small, shaded, high-humidity paludarium or aqua-terrarium setups. It is highly sensitive to algae, direct light, and poor water quality. Successful cultivation requires near-pristine water conditions, minimal water movement, and stable, moderate temperatures. It is a rare and exquisite specialty plant that rewards the most dedicated plant enthusiasts with its jewel-like mats of emerald translucency.
Light: Extremely low; must be grown in deep shade; even indirect room light may be sufficient for this species. CO2: Not required and potentially harmful if overdosed; the single-cell fronds absorb dissolved gases directly. Fertilisation: Essentially none; nutrients from clean tap water or remineralised RO water are sufficient. Placement: Attach to shaded, wet rock faces or driftwood in paludariums or extremely stable, low-flow aquariums. Propagation: Gently separate small mat fragments and transfer to shaded, moist hardscape surfaces in stable conditions.
