Crinum purpurascens
Also known as: Purple-tinged Crinum, West African Crinum Lily
Origin: West Africa
Crinum purpurascens is native to West Africa, growing along the margins of rivers and in seasonal floodplain habitats. It is distinguished from other aquatic Crinum species by a subtle purplish to reddish-violet suffusion at the base of its long, arching, strap-like leaves and on the leaf sheaths — a characteristic that gives the plant an elegant, refined quality compared to entirely green Crinum species.
The leaves can reach 40–80 cm in a well-maintained large aquarium and are held in a graceful, arching fountain rosette that provides sweeping visual movement in flowing water. In optimal conditions the plant may produce large, fragrant white flowers with long perianth tubes above the water surface, a rare and rewarding event in the aquarium.
C. purpurascens grows more slowly than Crinum natans or C. calamistratum, which suits aquariums where a bold background accent is required but rapid leaf expansion would create maintenance challenges. It appreciates warm, soft to moderately hard water and a nutrient-rich substrate.
Light: Medium; consistent moderate light maintains the faint purple leaf base colouration and supports steady growth. CO2: Not required; grows acceptably without supplementation in well-fertilised tropical setups. Fertilisation: Rich substrate; root tabs every 8 weeks; trace elements including manganese benefit the pigmentation. Placement: Background specimen in large aquariums (150 L+); allow 25 cm of unobstructed substrate around the bulb. Propagation: Offset bulbs (pupae) produced at the base; detach when rooted and at least 3 cm in diameter.
