Crinum purpurascens
Also known as: Purple Crinum Bulb, West African Crinum Bulb
Origin: West Africa
This is a single, large, premium Crinum purpurascens bulb sourced from cultivated stock, representing the ideal starting point for growing this graceful and comparatively rare West African Crinum from dormancy to full maturity. C. purpurascens is distinguished within the aquatic Crinum by the subtle purplish to violet suffusion at the base of its long arching leaves — a tonal quality that adds a layer of elegance not found in the all-green C. natans or the extremely narrow C. calamistratum.
From a dormant bulb, the first leaves typically emerge within 3–5 weeks in warm (24–28 °C), well-oxygenated water with a rich substrate. Growth is steady but not rapid; this species is best appreciated as a long-term permanent resident of a large display aquarium where it will develop over months and years into an increasingly impressive specimen.
Crinum purpurascens Bulb is an excellent gift for the serious planted tank enthusiast or for aquarists completing a Crinum species collection.
Light: Medium; consistent moderate lighting maintains the subtle purple leaf base tones and supports steady growth. CO2: Not required; grows acceptably in standard well-fertilised community aquarium conditions. Fertilisation: Rich substrate and root tabs every 8 weeks; manganese and trace elements support pigmentation. Placement: Background in large aquariums (150 L+); plant bulb with base at substrate, growing tip exposed. Propagation: Offset bulbs (pupae) produced at the base; harvest when rooted and at least 3 cm in diameter.
