Microsorium sp. 'Crocodile'
Also known as: Crocodile Fern, Croc Fern
Origin: Southeast Asia
Crocodile Fern (Microsorium sp. 'Crocodile') is an unusual Java Fern relative selected for its prominently embossed leaf surface that forms a regular pattern of raised cells resembling reptilian scales. This highly ornamental trait makes each leaf a focal point on driftwood or stones. It is somewhat rarer than other Java Fern cultivars and benefits from stable water parameters and moderate lighting to develop its characteristic pattern fully.
Light: low to medium light; consistent moderate light best develops the scale surface pattern. CO2: beneficial; CO2 enrichment and soft water enhance pattern definition and leaf quality. Attachment: attach rhizome securely to driftwood or stone with thread; do not bury the rhizome. Trimming: remove old fronds at the base; handle carefully as the embossed leaf surface can be fragile. Growth: slow; propagate by rhizome division.
